Read: Acts 13:36
“For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers…”
Did you realize that you are serving a specific purpose for your generation? God raises up men and women of faith to carry out HIS mission in a specific time and place in a way that no one else can. This is our destiny as sons and daughters of God. These are our “good works prepared in advance for us to walk in” (cf. Eph. 2:10) This is why we are given life and breath… why God has called us to himself. We are being used by Go to help write the story of our own generation… the story of how God is working in our time and space. Once we are down with this we “fall asleep and are laid with our forefathers…”
If we are still alive, it is because God is using us for his purpose in our own generation. You have been equipped and made for “such a time as this”. It is interesting to think that our time - here and now is unique - as each generation is. God has allowed his people to be faced with unique challenges and opportunities generation after generation. No two generations are exactly the same. What if each day of our lives was approached this way: as if God had been preparing us specifically for every challenge and opportunity we would face? What if we could declare at each twist and turn, “God built me for this!” Our gifts, our talents, our resources, our personalities, our interests, our failures… all of it… making us who we are so we can play a part for our generation.
This sweeping narrative of Paul paints for us a picture of the “long game”. God has been working, and he has not stopped. What will they say about us? Will we have “served God’s purpose” during our days on this earth? How will our “generations” chapter read? There is great good that God is doing here and now! The Kingdom of God is growing. If we are not going to be about the purposes of God… what is the point? We might as well “lay down to rest” and be put to “sleep”. But we have not been laid to rest! God is not finished with this generation… in fact he is just getting started! May this give us HOPE and “spur us on towards love and good deeds”. Love you guys. - JDP
