“God has multiple sons?… There are gods?”

Read: Heb. 1:4-14

“God has multiple sons?… There are gods?”

“After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” (v.4)

Many people do not realize that there are multiple “sons of God” , but there is ONLY ONE Son of God which is Jesus.Christ. It is easy to gloss over this fact as we read the scriptures. We see in the book of Job that “there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD” or that “the sons of God shouted for joy” when God “laid the foundations of the earth”. (Job 1:6, 38:7) A quick glance at a concordance will show you that the “sons of God” are actually referenced throughout the scriptures.

Another way that we see this truth played out is the way that there are multiple gods (little “g”) referenced in the scriptures but ONLY ONE God Most High / Creator God / YHWH God / One True God. There is “none like God”, but there are other spiritual beings that the bible calls “gods” as well as these “sons of God”. Most of us do not think of the fact that God had a spiritual “family” before he created the earth… they were “cheering him along” as he was creating it. (cf. Job) Most of us do not consider that there are other - lesser - gods yet only one God Most High.

Why does this matter? Well those other “sons of God” and other “gods” were given assignments and certain amounts of authority to interact with humanity by God Most High. These other gods and sons of God abused there power and authority at times to manipulate and control humanity… leading humans astray… getting humanity to worship them instead of God Most High. Some of these spiritual beings decided to REBEL against God and wage war with God Most High. You all are probably familiar with the Devil (Lucifer) but not as much with the idea that there were other “sons of God” or “gods” that rebelled against God as well. The Devil is simply called the “chief” or “prince”. (cf. Ps. 82) So to summarize, what we commonly call “angels” have been at times entrusted with authority here on earth over and at times even cast down to this world amidst humanity. Whether this is in Gen. 6 when they leave their post to come here against God’s orders (rebel), or in Deut. 32:8,9 when they were assigned to the people that God had divided up. (see also Gen. 11) The spiritual landscape of the scriptures is filled with these “angels” and the people of God need to know how Jesus is TOTALLY DIFFERENT and not the same as them!

The fact of the matter is that “angels” and spiritual beings have wielded great power on this earth amongst humanity - they still do today - but JESUS IS GREATER THAN EVERY ONE OF THEM. There is NO OTHER “son” like THE SON. He is the “only begotten Son”. (v.5) God has said that about no other son. (You know this does not mean that Jesus was “begotten” as in born from God - it is to say that there is “non like him”… that Jesus IS God Most High.) To the uninformed, one may think that Jesus coming to earth as a human meant that he was “lower than the angels” or less than God the same way that all the other spiritual beings that came here are less than God. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Before Jesus, every other angel, god, son of God, or spiritual thing that came to this earth was less than God and created by God. Jesus was the first and only way time that the “exact imprint” and “radiance” of God himself came to earth. The people of old where much more familiar with the spiritual realm and its interactions with the world then we are. They recognized the hierarchy and order of the cosmos, so this was a shocking claim for them. Remember, being banished to the earth was the Devil’s punishment, so Jesus coming to earth was a real plot twist! The question of how the Son of God was distinct from the other “sons of God” who had come in the past was actually important to them… and it should be to us as well.

Now you may think that you don’t need to be reminded of this… but you DO. To start: the Devil is a fallen angel (the one formerly known as Lucifer, and also called the Dragon) and Jesus is GREATER THAN HE IS IN EVERY WAY. Have you forgotten that? Sometimes we look around and think the Devil is winning… or has more power than Jesus… but he doesn’t. We need to be reminded of this in these “last days”. The Devil stands no chance against God Most High and neither does anyone or any thing that opposes him or stands against him. The power that Jesus brings to his people - his “brothers and sisters” - is GREATER THAN any other angelic power that is in this world. There are other gods and sons of God that have fallen, left their place, are in rebellion, and waring against the Lord. They are wreaking havoc here on earth… on humanity. They have sought to take for themselves the worship that belongs to the Lord. Jesus is greater than them all. Remember, The Devil may be called the prince…but Jesus is THE KING. Be reminded of this today.

Know these truths: that there is a spiritual realm filled with spiritual beings that have legitimate power allowed them by God and they are interacting with humanity whether we know it or not. Jesus came and is GREATER THAN everyone of them… for he is the “only begotten Son”… he is the “firstborn Son”… he is the one who will have all of his enemies become his “footstool”! (v.5,6,13) Jesus is MORE EXCELLENT than any other spiritual being, angel, son of God, or god… full stop! Jesus dwells within you… full stop. Whenever we think the enemy is “winning” or that God is “out of control” we must be reminded of this truth. When we realize that Christ is in us and we are in Christ… then the schemes and influence of these other “angels” on us is put into its right place! The Devil has no power over us other than what we allow him or that which is allowed by God. Jesus truly is King of kings and Lord of lords. The spiritual realm is no longer “hidden”. The enemy is boldly coming out into the open. He is mounting his “last stand” against Jesus in these last days. We need to be reminded more and more of the power and majesty of Christ. He is OUR KING. Love you guys. - JDP
